FIRST AID POLICY
Purpose: To facilitate the provision of effective First Aid in the event of injury or illness to NWVARC members, guests or horses.

- The aim of First Aid is to preserve life, prevent harm and promote recovery.
- All members should adhere to the procedures and processes outlined in this policy.
- This policy applies to all NWVARC members when participating in club rallies, functions or events.
Policy:
- Members are responsible for ensuring that they have in their possession, prescription medications and treatment requirements such as, but not limited to, asthma puffers, insulin and Epipens.
- Members are responsible for making informed decisions regarding participation in activities where an ongoing injury or medical condition exists.
- Members are required to have ambulance cover and an ambulance will be called in the case of an emergency or serious injury such as loss of consciousness or suspected head injury/concussion, difficulty breathing, broken bones and serious lacerations.
- A list of members with first aid qualifications to be kept with clubs Risk Management Plan.
- First Aid Kit to be available at all rallies/events; a stocked First Aid Kit is available in the club cupboard at the SEC. The first aid kit should be taken to any alternative venues unless another is available and easily accessible.
- A basic First Aid Kit for horses is to be available and easily accessible; a stocked Equine First Aid Kit is available in the club cupboard at the SEC.
- Emergency Services and Local Medical/Vet Numbers must be easily located and visible.
- Mobile phone or land line phone must be available at Club Rally/activity.
- The following procedure must be followed in the event of an accident:
- Halt the event or activity, if required, for safety reasons.
- Obtain or provide assistance for injured people or animals.
- Contain the situation to avoid further injury or accident.
- Control crowds for their protection and to allow access by emergency personnel.
- Keep horses away from injured people.
- Do not admit responsibility or volunteer information which may be incriminating.
- Make notes as soon as possible (names, addresses & phone numbers of witnesses etc.).
- Complete an HRCAV “Incident Report Form” including witness details. Keep original on file for future reference.
- Club forwards a copy of the HRCAV Incident Report Form to the HRCAV Office PO BOX 209 Nunawading 3131 with preventative ideas and feedback.
- Copy to Club Secretary to retain with Club records (7 years).
- RMO shall provide a report on incident at Club Meeting to review incident, assess response and identify future risk management strategies.
